Dr. Erika Schwarz Taylor
Background: Dr. Schwarz Taylor earned her B.S. in Biology and M.S. in Marine Biology from University of North Carolina, Wilmington and her Ph.D. in Plant Biology from University of Texas at Austin. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences and Bioinformatics Specialist at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX.
Focus: Both her undergraduate and masters research focused on developing quantitative molecular probes to identify diatom and dinoflagellate species in water samples from freshwater and marine environments in North Carolina.

Surface water assets are becoming increasingly sick due to human activities and a changing climate. This poses a threat to aquatic ecologies and water infrastructure, yet the current methodologies for diagnostics, detection, and monitoring are outdated.
However, recent advances in early detection and monitoring using advanced eDNA technology, in conjunction with groundbreaking eRNA technology, provide sustainable low-impact solutions to legacy methodologies.
With the combination of advanced eDNA, eRNA, and emerging treatment strategies providing low to no impact mitigation, effective ecosystem management is now possible.
